Geographical situation

The Chemical Industrial Park Knapsack is situated south of the city of Hürth in the so-called Rhine-Erft District, circa 10 kilometers south west of Cologne. The chemical park is divided into two sections: Knapsack (circa 60 hectares) and Hürth (circa 100 hectares). The sections are connected via an internal road, a railway and a pipeline.

The chemical park section Knapsack is about 600 meters from the nearest residential area. The city of Hürth is located to the north-east. The area of the technology and industrial park Knapsack and its different start-up companies borders on the chemical park to the north. To the north-west and west there are large companies, such as RWE’s Goldberg power station, a paper manufacturer and different forwarding companies.

The vast area of the former lignite open-cast mine “Vereinigte-Ville” lies to the south-west, where three disposal sites are operated today: one site is for power station ash (RWE) and one for mineral industrial waste. To the south-east there is a commercial park with other different service companies.

Some of these neighboring businesses also use the services of the Chemical Industrial Park Knapsack, e.g. the central waste water treatment plant.

An excellent surface road infrastructure and a dense motorway network in Rhineland make a fast exchange of goods with customers throughout Europe possible. Three highway interchanges - Hürth/Gleuel and Knapsack - on the A1 as well as Cologne-Klettenberg on the A4 serve as access points to the Cologne motorway network. The distance to the next highway on-ramp (Knapsack) is just a convenient (no cross-town traffic) 4 kilometers away. The Cologne Bonn Airport is only 30 kilometers away.

Road-traffic junction between the north – south / east – west axes in Europe. This is the case for surface roads and especially for rail traffic. The chemical park’s own public container terminal acts as a satellite terminal to the mega-terminal Cologne Eifeltor as well as the large-scale terminal located in Cologne Niehl’s harbor area, which is just 20 kilometers away. This harbor is linked to all overseas harbors on the North Sea.

The Chemical Industrial Park Knapsack is connected to the Rhine harbor Godorf as well as Cologne-Niehl via railway. This connection also serves as a link to the Deutsche Bahn (German Railways).
