Air pollution control
Substance emissions in the air occur during the production of the energy necessary for the chemical park as well as during plant production processes. In order to curtail these as much as possible for the neighboring community and the environment, we consider curbing them in the earliest planning stages. Using modern environmental technology in plants, such adverse effects can be largely avoided and are continually monitored.
All plants in the Chemical Park Knapsack are subject to comprehensive approval procedures carried out by the regional administration of Cologne before commissioning. During this process, it is determined whether or not the permissible prescriptive limits for air pollutants can be adhered to using appropriate emissions control systems and whether the plants are actually up to the current technical standards.
The amount of pollutants in a plant’s exhaust air is monitored by the operating companies and is also regularly checked by external experts according to legal regulations. Some of the measurements are directly transmitted electronically to the responsible regulatory authority.
In the part of Hürth called Alt-Hürth, which is located near the chemical park, the state authority for environment and consumer protection constantly monitors the air quality.
In the past decades it has been possible to further reduce exhaust emissions from production plants affecting the community surrounding the Chemical Park Knapsack. Especially the total amount of dust in the air (-99%) and the proportion of inorganic gases and vapors (-98%) has been drastically reduced.
This development is, on the one hand, the result of a change in structure, and it demonstrates, on the other hand, the successful efforts of all of the companies that have invested in improved exhaust purification technologies and process integrated environmental measures in order to further reduce adverse effects on the environment.
