ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
ACTING SUSTAINABLY AND RESPONSIBLY

Climate protection, ecology and sustainability are high-priority issues today – and for very good reasons. We are all responsible for protecting the environment and conserving natural resources for future generations. Protection of the environment is therefore an integral part of all the production processes and plans at the Chemical Industrial Park.

All the companies on site actively take on responsibility. The careful and sustainable handling of the raw materials, energy sources and other resources used is a common goal across the entire site. Given rising energy costs and the increasingly changing climate, energy and raw materials cost savings are of equal importance for both economic and ecological reasons.

Processes and technology for environmental protection have been developed continually since the site was first founded. Since the construction of a "central department for water and air" in the old Hoechst AG works in 1961 we have conducted our own research, especially in the waste water and exhaust gas treatment sectors. Effective protection of the environment is now an integral part of the guidelines of the chemical industrial park.

Responsibility for the ecological policies of the plants rests with the companies on site. As the site operator and central service provider, InfraServ GmbH & Co. Knapsack KG carries out monitoring in many cases. This is why we know that the plants at the Chemiepark Knapsack not only reliably observe the legally prescribed limits for all relevant pollutants, but actually stay well below them with regard to many measurement parameters. This is documented by regular measurements.

ENERGY SUPPLY

The reliable and economical supply of sufficient energy is one of the most important prerequisites for the chemical industry. The chemical park operator InfraServ Knapsack provides the manufacturing companies with the necessary energies in the form of electricity and process steam.

The continuous main load of the energy supply is borne by the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) power plant of E.ON Energy from Waste, where up to 300,000 tons of refuse-derived fuel are thermally utilized every year. This service is complemented by the combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant of the Norwegian energy company Statkraft. With 800 MW of installed capacity it is one of the largest CCGT power plants in Germany. A further combined gas turbine power plant with capacity of 400 MW is currently under construction. The energy supply of the Chemiepark Knapsack is thus guaranteed, also at peak load time.
